Who’s doing this and why?

Hi, I'm Roza. It took me 3 years of living here to meet a neighbor. When it finally happened, it wasn’t because I got the courage to strike up an elevator conversation. It was because I put up a flyer and started pairing neighbors for 10-minute “say hi” chats.

I learned that many neighbors, just like me, didn’t know anyone here, had never been to the block parties on our own street, and had no idea that we have a monthly volunteer clean up or four different trivia nights.

In neighborhoods like ours, the people we pass at the coffee shop or on the sidewalk are just as likely to be visiting, working, or commuting through as they are to live two floors up from us. That makes it harder to come to recognize familiar faces. And while more is happening locally than most people realize, it’s often scattered across venues and calendars that are hard to find if you don’t already know where to look.

We have awesome parks, events, local businesses, and neighbors. Many of us just haven’t met yet.

This project is meant to make local connection easier by pairing neighbors for quick coffee chats, hosting resident-centered events, and helping people discover more of what’s already happening nearby. More familiar faces, more nearby plans, a more connected neighborhood.

What is SF Good Neighbor week?

San Francisco Good Neighbor Week is an annual citywide celebration honoring everyday residents who foster kindness, connection, and community in their local neighborhoods. Launched in 2025 by Good Neighbor Lab.

Who is this for?

Hey There Neighbor is for everyone everywhere who’s curious to know the people they share walls, hallways and streets with.

This event is for residents of East SoMa, Rincon and immediately adjacent areas. If you consider these areas to be in "neighborly walking distance,” this is for you.

If you’re in a different neighborhood and would like to help set up something similar there, please reach out to Roza.

Why meet neighbors?

Meet people you’ll recognize around the neighborhood, make local friends, find activity buddies, connect over shared interests, and build relationships with neighbors you can rely on. Knowing the people around you makes a neighborhood feel more like home.

How exactly does this work?

When you sign up, we will recommend several great neighbors for you to meet. You can also find neighbors to meet by specific interests. Select a day and time that works for you and click the “say hi” button to check if the neighbor is free.

You can meet neighbors at one of the participating local businesses and show them your meeting confirmation email to receive a complimentary drink or snack.

To be entered into the gift card raffle, take a photo of you meeting a neighbor and submit it by replying to your meeting confirmation email.

Note: Photos to be featured on our project website and social media to celebrate neighborhood connections and spotlight the local businesses helping bring neighbors together.

If you cannot make these dates, your neighbors might be fun to meet some other time :)
